The Story Behind the Song “Sway”

One example of a song that carries the unique combinations of suave, smoothness and positivity that it is able to stand the test of time is Sway. Remixed by so many artists, this song is the English version of a 1953 Spanish mambo instrumental song done by Mexican composers Pablo Beltran Ruiz and Luis Demetrio called Quien sera?.

In 1954, an English version of the original song came up in the airwaves. It was written by the popular American lyricist Norman Gimbel (whose written songs include Killing Me Softly With His Song, Summer Samba, The Girl from Ipanema and Canadian Sunset) and was sung by the “King of Cool” Dean Martin. This particular recording took the 15th spot on the Billboard US Hot 100 year 1954, and also reached number 6 on the UK Singles Chart of the same year.

In 1960, another charmer recorded his own version of the song and the resulting track was as sexy and lovable. Bobby Rydell’s take on Sway reached no. 14 on the charts of that year , of which ran for 11 weeks. Moreover, it is the 9th of Rydell’s 33 musical hits between the years 1959 to 1965. This version gathered so many fans around the globe that more than a many consider it “THE definitive recording” of the song.

Modern takes on the song include that of Canadian singer Michael Bublé and the American girl group The Pussycat Dolls.

Now, with the touch of the Florida Orchestra’s Jeff Smick and his incredible violin playing, plus the mellifluous voice of Tanya Lewis in the background, Nick Dukas and his group captures the good mood this song holds — one that will surely compel your body to groove to the music.
